Christian Depression Book for Pastors & Believers - Carlton L. Coon Sr.
A Christian book on depression written by a pastor who has been there and understands.
What This Book is About
If you are a believer struggling with depression — or a pastor trying to help someone who is — Light in a Dark Place — Encountering Depression speaks directly to where you are.
Who It’s For
Depression is real. Its presence does not mean you are a terrible sinner or that your faith has failed. For Christians, that truth alone can be lifesaving. This book validates the struggle, describes the symptoms, and uses the Bible to put depression in perspective.
More than Diagnosis — a Path Forward
Most books on depression describe the darkness. Light in a Dark Place goes further. More than two-thirds of this book is devoted to practical, actionable responses for fighting back —strategies that don’t require you to “just pray harder” but meet you where you are.
You’ll find help for:
Reconnecting with God’s creation, even when your energy is gone.
Using music, memory, and anticipation as weapons against despair.
What Scripture says about Elijah, Job, and others who battled depression while still in God’s will.
Knowing when and how to seek help without shame.
What family members, friends, and pastors can do to walk alongside someone who is in the dark.
This is not a book of platitudes. It is a book of tools.

How This Book Differs From Dozens of Other Christian Books About Depression

What Readers Have Said
Light in a Dark Place - Encountering Depression is my own story. In an earlier pastorate, I went to the dark places you describe. It encouraged me to know I wasn't alone. Light in a Dark Place was incredible. Thank you. Pastor Chris Paolini
One reader who battles depression said: “He described me exactly.”
Louisiana District Superintendent Derald Weber called it “much needed.”
Bishop Anthony Mangun gives Light in a Dark Place to those battling depression.
A Suffragan Bishop of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (PAW) called it a must-read.
A youth pastor said that Light in a Dark Place has helped him serve middle school students dealing with depression.
Thank you for Light in a Dark Place - Encountering Depression. I tried to deal with depression by fasting, praying, studying, and repenting. None fully worked. Your book brought perspective and eased my battle. I realized that I wasn't alone. Dave O.

About the Author
Carlton L. Coon Sr. is a pastor, author, and minister with more than 45 years of experience in local church leadership. He has led three congregations to healthy growth and has written more than 40 books on discipleship, pastoral ministry, and Christian living — all drawn from personal experience rather than theory.
Light in a Dark Place is the most personal thing he has written. Major Depressive Disorder is not an abstract subject for him. He has been there. Writing this book required revisiting some of the dark seasons of life. The book was written because the subject of depression needed to be brought into the light — particularly in Apostolic and Pentecostal circles where it has too often been met with silence, or worse, with rebuke.
He and Norma live and pastor in Springfield, Missouri. They are Co-Pastor of Calvary Pentecostal Church. He can be reached through this site if you would like him to speak or teach on the subject of depression to your group or congregation.
